    Major Brown served from April, 1956 through May, 1978 as an enlisted man in both the Army and the Air Force and as an Air Force Officer. He was commissioned and awarded his wings as a navigator in March, 1961. He flew KC-97 tankers and B-47 bombers taking part in the Cuban Missile Crisis while in the Strategic Air Command He was assigned to Travis AFB, California in December, 1965 where he flew C-124, C-135, C-141 and C-5 aircraft. During his combat tour in Viet Nam, he flew EB-66 aircraft. He completed his combat tour as Wing Standardization Navigator at Korat RTAFB, Thailand in 1973. As a Captain, he was selected as a Formation Lead Navigator in C-141 air drop operations. Major Brown received two Air Force Commendation Awards for planning and leading a number of high profile air drop missions in the United States, Korea and Italy as well as several C-5 air refueling missions throughout the world. Major Brown was the primary navigator on the first C-5 aircraft delivered to Travis AFB, California in 1970. He was the primary navigator on the C-5 mission that delivered the Apollo/Soyuz capsule from Hawaii to the Johnson Space Center as well as supporting other Apollo missions throughout the Pacific Region. He served as a Flight Instructor and as a Flight Examiner in both C-141 and C-5 aircraft and ended his military career as Standardization Navigator in the C-5 aircraft.
