Honored by:
George Avaritt served in the US Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1945. He was the co-pilot of an 8th Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress shot down on his fourth mission by German fighters on September 2, 1944. He was a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 1 until April 30, 1945.
He served as an Army aviator with the Tennessee National Guard from 1948 to 1982, and retired as a major.
