Maj. Brandt entered the U. S. Air Force in 1962 as an intelligence officer. In 1966 he completed navigator training and was assigned to a C-124 squadron. Subsequently he flew C-133s before transitioning into Tactical Air Command and becoming qualified in the RF-4C. After several operational Recce assignments He volunteered for the F-111A Training Program. He flew as a WSO in the F-111A squadrons at Nellis AFB and Mt. Home AFB, before retiring from the USAF in 1984.
