    Maj.. James Hull Herbert (Jim) b. 21 July 1918
    Jim grew up in Columbia, S.C. and graduated from Princeton University in 1940 where he was on the freshman heavy crew, majored in economics, excelled in R.O.T.C. (Field Artillery), was a member of Charter Club.
    Jim went on active duty in August, 1941, and was put into the Army Air Corps as a ground officer. After pilot training, he graduated in the class of 1944-A flying P38s. After about four months at Van Nuys, California, he was put in charge of 100 P-38 pilots shipped to England in May, 1944, where he joined the 77th Fighter Squadron, 20th Fighter Group at Kings Cliffe about 100 miles north of London. He flew 57 combat missions (14 in P-38s and 43 in P-51Ds), completing his tour in December, 1944, just before the Battle of the Bulge. He received the D.F.C. (Distinguished Flying Cross), and Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters.
    After WWII, he farmed in Delaplane, Virginia, and had several entrepreneurial adventures.
    Jim married Elizabeth Kabler Thomson in 1948. They raised five children: Elizabeth, Jim, Jr., Beverley, Bruce, and Sarah. Jim has been a lifelong contributor to various community and state organizations and is still an active pilot at age 86 years as of this writing (July, 2004).
