Citation for award of the Distinguished Flying Cross reads:

"For heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 January 1968, Major LYNCH launched as Aircraft Commander aboard a KC-130 aircraft assigned a resupply mission in support of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. Despite receiving a heavy volume of hostile antiaircraft fire as he commenced an approach to the besieged airfield, he steadfastly continued his descent to the runway. As the aircraft landed, the runway suddenly came under North Vietnamese mortar and artillery fire, and Major LYNCH was directed by the control tower to quickly depart the area. Realizing the importance of his vital cargo, he calmly directed the unloading of the KC-130 as it taxied across the area. Ignoring the hostile fire impacting nearby, he skillfully maneuvered his transport along the exposed runway and quickly became airborne. Major LYNCH's courage, superb aeronautical ability and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
