    Born in Stoteburg, SC. Graduated West Point in 1917 and went to France with field artillery in 1917. Transferred to Air Service and trained as aerial observer at Valdehon in 1918. Aerial Gunnery school at Caseaux and achieved the highest score for an American.
    Commander and Chief Observer of 12th Aero Squadron. Was the first American to qualify as a pilot and to perform a mission over German lines. Battles of Champaign, Toul Sector (Croix de Guerre); Luneville Sector, Chateau Thierry. August 1918 returned to US to lead a special mission of instruction at various posts. Officer in charge of flying at Fort Sill, OK January 1919. Transferred to DC where he was appointed Asst. Chief of Air Operations. Died after a plane crash near Ft. Sill while on an official mission. Posthumous Distinguished Service Cross.
    Nicknamed "Monk" or "Deacon" because he could look so serious and innocent while being exceedingly amusing. Possessed of unusual intelligence and ability, undaunted courage, perseverance and fortitude, genial disposition, scintillating wit, loyalty and consideration for others.
