Howell flew UH-1D Iroquois “Huey” helicopter which could carry up to 13 soldiers and gear or up to 4500 pounds of cargo. In Vietnam for exactly one year from May 1970 to 1971, Keith was a 1st Lt., performing part of his time as one of the platoon commanders in one of three helicopter platoons in the 48th Assault Helicopter Company. There were approximately 18 other flight officers and twenty enlisted men in his platoon. Because some of the flights were considered quite dangerous, Keith was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the Bronze Star.
