?»?Major John D. Philipsborn served in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. Major Philipsborn was briefly General Dwight Eisenhower's pilot towards the end of the War. Though born in Chicago, he also served as a flight instructor and liaison officer for the pilot trainees of the Free French Air Force because of his pre-war knowledge of French. After the war, he served as a U.S. diplomat in France, and remained in Europe as a banker until his retirement. Following his example, his son John T. Philipsborn obtained commercial pilot ratings.
