Major Shutok began his military career by enlisting in the Navy in July 1942. He attended Aviation Radio and Radar School in Memphis, Tennessee, receiving the grade of Aviation Radioman 3rd. Class. He was retained as an instructor teaching Navy and Marine pilots the proper use of aviation radio and radar at Memphis Naval Technical Training School and also served at the Aviation Radio and Radar Test Center, Patuxent Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland. After several other assignments he was discharged at Camp Stoneman, California in 1946.
Commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from the Duquesne University Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1949, he was assigned to the 444th Air Force Reserve at Greater Pittsburgh Airport, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. He was transferred to the 375th. Troop Carrier Reserve Wing also at Coraopolis and was subsequently recalled to active duty with the 375th Troop Carrier Wing, at the same station, as deputy finance officer in 1950. From there he was sent to Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville South Carolina.
After attending Finance School in St. Louis, Missouri, he was assigned to the 433rd. Troop Carrier Wing, which was shipped to Rhein-Main A. F. Base in Frankfort, Germany in 1951. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1952 and transferred to the 60th Troop Carrier Wing at the same base.
Following assignments at various bases in the United States as part of the Air Force Reserve he was promoted to Captain in 1956 and later to Major in 1963.
In 1968 after serving over twenty years combined active and reserve duty, Major Stanley J. Shutok retired from his role as Comptroller of the 171st Aeromedical Airlift Wing at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.
