General Orders, No 15, HEADQUARTERS FIFTH AIR FORCE, APO 925,6 Jan 1944
1. AWARDS OF THE DISTINGUISHED-FLYING CROSS
By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Ad of Congress
approved 2 July 1926 (Bulletin 8, va: 1926), a Distinguished-Flying Cross is
awarded by the Commanding General, Fifth Air Force, to the following named officers
and enlisted men:
Captain MALCOLM C. SPONENBERGH, (0430862), Headquarters, V Fighter
Command, Air Corps, United States Army. For operational flight missions from 5 September 1942 to 6 December 1943.
For heroism in flight and exceptional and outstanding accomplishment in the
face of great danger above and beyond the line of duty. These operations consisted of
over fifty missions including escorting bombers and transport aircraft, interception and
attack missions, and patrol and reconnaissance flights. In the course of .these
operations, strafing and bombing attacks were made from dangerously low altitudes,
destroying and damaging enemy installations and equipment.
