Mac had an avid interest in airplanes and flying while growing up. He built many models (e.g,. a P-39) and worked with U-control gasoline planes (remember the "Firebaby"?). He even attempted to do some radio control work in the early 1960s.

Mac learned to fly in a Piper J-3 Cub (Horn Flying School, Chagrin Falls, Ohio). This was part of an Air Force ROTC program at Case Institute of Technology, in the spring of 1959.

Mac received a BS degree and a commission in the USAF and went into the Air Force Flight Training Program (June of 1959). Mac completed Primary Flight Training at Moore Air Base (contractor) near McAllen, Texas. This included approximately 30 hours flight time in a T-34 (Beech) and approximately 100 hours flight time in a T-37 (Cessna -twin jet trainer).

Mac started USAF Basic training at Webb AFB near Big Spring Texas. He logged about 50 hours flight time in a T-33 trainer. He did an "SIE" (self-initiated elimination) after an aircraft accident on April 12, 1960.

Mac continues to have an interest in aviation. A vacation trip this year included a visit to Dayton, OH and to Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, NC.
