    A member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), Class 44-W-4, 319th Wing. As part of a program that began in August of 1943, to provide needed pilot support when America entered into World War II. WASPs had privileges of officers, but were never formally adopted into the Army Air Force (AAF). They remained civil service employees without injury or death benefits. In November of 1977, President Carter signed a bill granting WW II veterans’ status to former WASPs. Planes flown: AT-6, BT-123, UC-45, C-47, B-17 stationed at Love Field, Bryan Army base.
    The WASPs broke ground for USAF female pilots who would follow in their footsteps. General H. H. Arnold, speaking at the last class on 12/7/1944: “You have shown that you can fly wingtip to wingtip with your brothers. iIf ever there was doubt in anyone’s mind that women could become skilled pilots, the WASPs dispelled that doubt.
