The Marine Corps Aviation Gunners Who Guarded Their Pilots
We went along for the ride in torpedo bombers, dive bombers, medium bombers. We went when ill with malaria or dengue fever. We fired and were fired upon. We kept enemy planes from attacking from the rear. We displayed no special courage: we did the task asked of us. A few of us were on seventy and more missions. A crew from VMB-612 flew the final combat mission of World War II. We received no medals nor expected any. We were proud to be Marines and for the chance to serve our country.
