Matthew B. Sellers, II 1869-1932, invented the retractable landing gear in 1908 and patented it in 1911. He also had the first powered flight in Kentucky in his quadraplane on December 28, 1908. His artifacts are in both the Smithsonian Museums, downtown DC and the Udvar-Hazy Center out in Dulles. I wrote an aviation history book on him, which is called "A Moment in Time" and is 552 pages. It includes all his lab notes, diaries, pictures and 5 patents along with numerous magazine articles he was asked to write in the early 1900's. He was appointed by Thomas Edison to the first Naval Consulting Board in 1915 and was also friends with the Wright Brothers, President Harding, President Woodrow Wilson, Chanute, Curtiss and Gustave Whitehead. He was my grandfather and I never had the chance to know him, but follow his passion for flight. Here at the Udvar-Hazy he has two engines on display in the propulsion gallery, three airfoils in the Model section and a control arm, used with his retractable landing gear in early flight section. I miss him every day, but know he is always with me and he is who drove me to do the book on him.
