    Master Chief James E. Fleming, a native of Brownsville, Tennessee, entered the United States Navy in October 1974, attending Recruit Training in Orlando, Florida.
    Following initial training he attended Aviation Electronics Technician, (AT) "A" school in Millington, TN and from there was assigned to VAQ-138 at Oak Harbor, WA. In 1976. During this tour he completed two deployments aboard USS Saratoga, CV-60 and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN-69. His next assignment was to Instructor Duty at NATTC Millington, TN in 1979 as an "A" school instructor where he earned his "Master Training Specialists Designation.
    In 1982, Master Chief Fleming was assigned to VAQ-134 at Oak Harbor, WA. where he deployed twice aboard USS Carl Vinson, CVN-70 While assigned to VAQ-134 he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer. In 1986 Master Chief Fleming reported to Chief of Naval Air Training at Corpus Christi, TX. serving as the Drug and Alcohol Program Manager and earning his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist qualification.
    Master Chief Fleming transferred to VA-34 at Virginia Beach, VA in 1989, where he deployed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN-69 and USS George Washington, CVN-73. In June 1990 he was advanced to Senior Chief.
    From 1993 to 1994 Master Chief Fleming was assigned to the VA-42 at Virginia Beach, VA. where he was promoted to Master Chief and subsequently transferred to Commander Attack Wing Atlantic for 1 year. In 1995 Master Chief Fleming transferred to USS George Washington, CVN-73 for 6 months and then transferred again to USS Enterprise, CVN-65. In the fall of 1997 he transferred to NAWC Point Magu, California. In 1999 he attended the Senior Enlisted Academy, Newport, Rhode Island.
    In 1999, Master Chief Fleming served as Command Master Chief of USS Mount Whitney, LCC/JCC-20, home ported in Norfolk, VA. where he completed qualification as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) and deployed to the Mediterranean.
    In November 2002 Master Chief Fleming reported for duty as the Command Master Chief of the Grim Reapers of VF-101 and remained there until February of 2004. His final assignment was the CMC of the Gladiators of VFA-106. He retired on August 12*, 2005, at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA,
    Master Chief Fleming has earned the Enlisted Aviation and Surface Warfare Specialist qualifications and the Master Training Specialist badge. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) and numerous campaign and unit awards.
