Merlyn graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in January of 1964 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. In February of 1964, he started work for NASA at the Manned Space Craft Center (now Johnson Space Center). He worked on the Apollo Service Module and Lunar Module (LM) main propulsion systems. He supported the checkout and preflight predictions of the first LM Ascent main propulsion system, as well as conducted post flight analyses of the systems performance. After the end of the Apollo program, he supported numerous in-house space shuttle (SS) propulsion system studies and initiated and managed the SS Orbital Maneuvering system (OMS) engine technology efforts. He also initiated the first non-toxic propellant OMS technology demonstrations. Merlyn left NASA after supporting the first space shuttle flight and completed his propulsion effort at Aerojet in Sacramento, California.
