Michael Curtis Whitlow, born on August 9, 1950, and known to his friends as "Mick," became enamored with space when, as a young boy. He stood outside of his Glen Lyn, Virginia home and watched Sputnik pass overhead.

He loved following the development of the space program, but he chose to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1972. He spent 28 years working with Borg Warner and then General Electric Plastics. But he always loved space. He bought a telescope to bring space closer. His favorite movies were "The Right Stuff" and "Apollo 13." He died in a tragic accident on June 10, 2000.
