Charles Campbell graduated with a master's degree from the University of Michigan and took all the doctoral course work. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest and largest collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
He detected free radicals C2, CH and C3 in absorption in a shock tube using a flash time of 10 milliseconds.
He was an advisor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at both Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory and Lockheed on aerial and space photography.
He modified computer programs dealing with the shuttle and the atmosphere.
