Francis learned to fly as a young man. He became a flight instructor before WWII. His first assignment with the Army Air Corp was as a flight instructor at Eagle Field. He then became a transport pilot flying 2,450 hours on missions over the China Burma Hump. His most remembered cargo was Lilly Ponds and Andrew Kastelanetz. Francis received the Ari Medal, two Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Bronze Star.
