Glen Truman Niederhauser, born April 6, 1910, was a pioneer in the aviation industry, taking his first flying lesson in 1929 after graduating from the Braley School of Flying in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating, he returned to Iowa and purchased half interest in the Grinnell Flying Service that consisted of a 0X5 American Eagle airplane and a SM&A Stinson. In 1934 he bought the other half of the Stinson and moved his barnstorming operation to his father's farm near Marshalltown, Iowa.
In 1939, Niederhauser obtained land just north of Marshalltown and he and his brother, Harry, started an airport. By this time, Glen had established an approved flight school and had won a contract for a Civilian Pilot Training (CPT) program from the government. In 1943 during WWII, the CPT was changed to the War Training Service (WTS) where each eight weeks, some 100 Army cadets were sent to Marshalltown from Randolph Field for flight training. After training pilots for the next year, Glen enlisted in the Navy in 1944 where he was a check pilot, acrobatic instructor and engineering officer.
In 1958, Glen and his brother Harry obtained a lease on the Waterloo, Iowa Airport. In 1961, Glen became sole owner of the airways business in Waterloo and Niederhauser Airways, Inc. was born. At the height of Niederhauser Airways, there were about 60 airplanes and eight chartered pilots flying business men around the country.
As owner/operator of Niederhauser Airways, Inc., a Fixed Base Operation (FBO), aviation service center and accredited flight training school, Glen specialized in all segments of the aviation industry from barnstorming and crop dusting to airplane sales, flight instruction, and charter services. Glen died on September 11, 2002 at the age of 92.
