Sanford N. McDonnell joined what became the McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC) in 1948, nine years after his uncle, James S. McDonnell, founded the company. In 1972, he became corporate president and chief executive officer and in 1980, chairman and chief executive officer. He retired in 1988. Before becoming corporate president, he had direct responsibility for the F-4 Phantom program, and later served as divisional president of the McDonnell Aircraft Company component of MDC.
