    MSgt Gamble enlisted at Omaha, Nebraska about October 1917. He went to France in August 1918 and joined the 16th Balloon Company. He returned to the United States after 11 Nov 1918, and continued his service in lighter-than-air, first in Texas and then at Scott Field, Illinois in early 1920. He was assigned to the 8th Airship Company. He went to Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1922 where he began his training on airships. He graduated from the US Army Balloon and Airship School at Scott Field in on 30 July 1926. His lighter-than-air experience included observation balloons, free balloons, and airships. He was a rated airship pilot.

    MSgt Gamble and family moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 1930 where he was assigned to the 2nd Balloon Company. The unit was located at Pope Field, at that time a part of Fort Bragg. The mission was in support of Fort Bragg field artillery units.

    The Gambles moved to Albrook Field, Canal Zone, in 1935 where MSgt Gamble was assigned to the 74th Bomb Squadron as Line Chief. During the 4 years he was in the Squadron, it was equipped with the Keystone B-6, the Boeing P-12E, and the Northrop A-17. His career ended at Fort Douglas, Utah with B-17s, where he retired for disability.
