    Joseph Carroll enlisted in the US Army Air Forces on 19 September 1941 and retired as an Air Force master sergeant on 30 September 1962. He served in the South and Southwest Pacific for three and a half years (from February 1942 to early August 1945) and participated in seven major battles.

    He arrived in Korea in August 1950 and participated in three major battles before returning to the United States in January 1952. The highest position held was as the noncommissioned officer in charge of all avionics and electronics (A&E) maintenance shops (with the exception of K systems) while he was assigned as a member of the 68th A&E Maintenance Squadron, lake Charles Air Force Base, Louisiana.

    He retired at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
