    Honored by:

Murray "Big Shorty" Codman was drafted to the U.S. Army on February 19, 1943 and volunteered for the air force "USAAF" and was trained as an aircraft engine and airframe mechanic and aerial gunner.
He was assigned to the 8th Air Force 447 Bomb Group 710 Squadron, stationed in Rattlesden, England. He flew a B-17 Flying Fortress which I named "Big Shorty" and the name has been my nickname ever since. My first mission was to Berlin on May 19, 1944 and my 33rd mission was to Belfort, France which was a bit less stressing than Berlin.
On August 11, 1944, I received the Distinguished Flying Cross and 5 Air Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation and European Theater of Operations Medal after returning to the U.S.
I taught aircraft instruments at Chanute Field, Illinois. I took a course to train aircraft jet mechanics.
I was honorably discharged October 24, 1945 with the rank of Tech Sergeant.
