    Paul enlisted in the Air Force in June 1951. After completing electronics school, he attended Aviation Cadet Class 53-C. In preparation for an assignment in the Korean War he trained in F-80 and F-89 aircraft. When the Korean War ended he was assigned to Duluth, Minn. Flying F-86D & F-89 aircraft. He left the Air Force in 1956 and returned to the University of North Carolina where he received a degree in Chemistry. He returned to active duty in early 1963 as an instructor in T-33 & T-38 aircraft. In 1967 he was ordered to Uban, Thailand where he flew 83 combat missions. His last flying assignment was to Wethersfield, England flying F-100 aircraft in a nuclear role. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Flying Medal with four OLC, The Meritorious Service Medal with one OLC, and the Commendation Medal among others.
