Paul Hawkins, a miller's son from Ozark, MO, enlisted in the Army Air Corps Kelly Field in 1922 at age 20. Never wanted to fly, just to keep airplanes flying. Worked on SPAD's, D-8's, NB-3's. Became Armament Instructor, Lindbergh being one of his students. After 1925 worked for emerging airplane and airline companies -- Pan-Am, TWA, U.S. Airlines, Hanford, Mid-Continent. In '42 was recruited to head the secret project to modify Doolittle's B-25's for his Tokyo Raid. Worked at Chamberlin Field, Minneapolis -- no written documents, plans or priorities. Then became head of Engineering for Lockheed's assembly operation in Ireland (Langford Lodge). There he also created special field units to repair/recover aircraft crash-landed after raids over Europe. Over 100 planes returned to service. In 1946 after 24 years in aviation he continued his native creativity with many inventions and patents in farm, construction, and security equipment. Died as an active 'fixer-upper' in Florida In 1998, at age 96.
