    Honored by:
    Mr. Paul Falk

Born in Baltimore Md in 1948, Paul Russell Falk is one the many unsung space program heroes, who have transformed dreams and ideas into engineered solutions. For over 30 years he has been involved in the design and fabrication of microelectronic and printed wiring board technologies used in various spacecraft built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. These spacecraft include MSX (Midcouse Space Experiment), NEAR-Shoemaker (which orbited and landed on asteroid Eros), TIMED and ACE (both still active after 10 years of collecting science data), MESSENGER (now orbiting Mercury), STEREO (twin craft obtaining 3D solar images), New Horizons (a flyby to Pluto and beyond) and RBSP (twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes). He has contributed in many ways – introducing computer aided manufacturing techniques, managing APL’s PWB fabrication facilities through a time of great change and leading fabrication teams. His signature contributions, however, have always been a result of his ability to look at things in a new way; using his experience to come up with creative solutions to the packaging problems that always arise when designing and building complex electronic systems. That, coupled with his uncanny ability to troubleshoot and keep the manufacturing facilities operating, has made him an integral part of APL’s history of space exploration.
