Peter Kenneth Hulme was born in Isleworth, Middlesex, England in 1932. As a young boy, he lived in London during the Battle of Britain surviving the Luftwaffe aerial bombardments while spending many nights in the backyard air raid bomb shelter. After serving in the Royal Air Force (United Kingdom) in the Middle East as uniformed personnel, he returned to civilian life in London. In 1960 he met his Swiss-American wife in London while volunteering at a youth hostel in Holland Park - she needed a ride, he had a Vespa scooter.
In 1961, he immigrated to the United States on the SS United States settling in Brooklyn, NY where their three children were born. During this time, he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) detachment at JFK airport specializing in the shipment of sensitive cargo of a military or diplomatic nature. In 1970, he was transferred to the RAF detachment at Dulles International Airport under the auspices of the British Embassy. He served in this capacity until his death in 1992.
Upon retiring, the Royal Air Force Strike Command presented this Commendation by Air Officer Commanding-in-chief, Michael Graydon to Mr. Peter K. Hulme. This certificate is awarded to you in appreciation of the meritorious service which you have rendered to the Royal Air Force while serving in Strike Command.
