    Wall of Honor Level:
    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:

In 9 years of research at the USAF Arnold Engineering Development Center, Tullahoma, TN, Mr. Rubins investigated combustion in supersonic flow initiated by both normal and oblique shock waves. He authored or co-authored aver 10 published papers on this phenomenon, which he termed "shock-induced combustion." This work included both theoretical and experimental correlations and applications to hypersonic air breathing propulsion. He was awarded the Society of Automotive Engineers Wright Brothers' Medal for best paper of 1963, as a co-recipient. One patent was granted on the application of standing shock waves to evaluate global chemical kinetic combustion rates. He is an adjunct professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a course in hypersonic air-breathing combustion. He is a co-developer of a simplified "zone" combustion model that was used to redesign aircraft gas turbine combustors to improve operating efficiency and reduce pollutants. He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
