Phil learned to fly in the ROTC and then the USAF. After his tour was up he went to work for United Airlines. He flew for UAL from 1964 to 1997. He spent 10 or more years in the training center in Denver. At one point he was the fleet manager for the 757, 767,777,747. He received an award for representing UAL pilots in the design of the 777 cockpit. He worked with the engineers and others at the Boeing plant in Everett for 5 years.
