    Ms. Sandra Turney Addy

Professor A. L. (Tad) Addy was head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1987 through 1998. The department was comprised of approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 250 graduate students, 50 faculty members, and 35 staff members. The graduate program in mechanical engineering was ranked third in the nation by a survey reported in the March 10, 1997 issue of US News and World Report and the undergraduate program was ranked fourth in a similar survey, two of many such citations during the 1990s.

Professor Addy?’'s accomplishments as an educator and administrator have contributed to the excellence of the education of numerous engineers and scientists working in the aerospace industry today.

Professor Addy joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1963. He was associate head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from 1980 to 1987. In 1987 he was appointed to the post of department head, a position in which he served until his retirement in 1998. An internationally recognized researcher in fluid dynamics, Professor Addy is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was a keynote speaker at the 20th Army Science Conference in Norfolk, Virginia, in June 1996. His research findings in the areas of supersonic ejectors and base flow have been widely utilized in the design aircraft and missiles including the Concorde and the space shuttle. Although he is no longer active in research, his research publications are to this day cited in the literature in the field of fluid dynamics. He has received honors and awards for his accomplishments in education as well as research. Among those awards is the American Society for Engineering Education Ralph Coates Roe Award in 1990.
