Ralph Golubock was born to fly airplanes. It was in his blood. In his youth he read every book, every magazine, every newspaper article that he could find about airplanes and flying. His eyes were always on the sky. He was determined to be a pilot. Unfortunately it took a terrible world war for him to achieve his dream. When his country called, he enlisted in the Air Force and became the best pilot he could be. Like many of his generation who were called upon to fight for their country, he seldom spoke of his war time experiences. But he finally decided to write a book which was his way of explaining to his family and friends what he had experienced, how his wife, Thelma coped, and how all the years that followed were profoundly influenced.

We, his loving family, have enormous respect and admiration for what he did. He flew nineteen bombing missions over Germany as the pilot of a B-24 known as "The Princess." On his last mission his plane was hit by enemy fire. He managed to safely fly the damaged plane to Sweden where he and his crew were interned until their repatriation. To this day it is difficult to comprehend how normal American men and women, such as Ralph, sacrificed and endured so much so willingly.

Well into his old age, Ralph continued his fascination with aviation. It was much more than a hobby. It sustained him and nourished him as he provided for his wife and two sons.
