Learned to fly and soloed at Swan Island, Portland's (OR) first international airport, next to the Tex Rankin Field (Rankin was a pioneer pilot of the Northwest). Later Swan Island became an industrial park which turned out scores of Liberty ships and other craft for use in World War II (WWII) under Henry J. Kaiser.
