    Many friends of Dr. Evans

The Reverend Dr. Louis Hadley Evans, Jr. was a dedicated pastor and pilot. He used these skills to serve needs of both his congregations and many people who needed air transportation because of medical conditions.

Louis Hadley Evans, Jr. was born in Wilmington, California on June 20, 1926. He graduated from Occidental College in 1950. He received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1953 from the San Francisco Theological Seminary and continued his studies for two years in New College at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from Tarkio College, Missouri in 1967.

He was ordained in 1953 and served as an interim minister at South Kirk, Penicuick, Scotland between 1953 and 1955. In September 1955 Rev. Evans was called to serve as the organizing minister of the new Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles where he served as the Senior Minister until 1963. He then was called to the First Presbyterian Church in La Jolla, California and served that congregation as Senior Minister until 1973 before being called as the Senior Minister of The National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC in 1973.

Shortly after coming to Washington in the early 1970s Dr. Evans, along with Mr. Edward Boyer of the US Department of Health and Human Services, discovered a common passion for flying airplanes and serving people. One day over lunch in 1972 the men conceived a flight plan and they began flying medical patients or shuttling speakers to meetings of non-profit organizations. In 1977, Dr. Evans, Mr. Boyer, and two other pilots purchased a Beech Bonanza 36 six-seat aircraft and the Washington Aviation Ministry was born. The Ministry has undergone many changes and today (in 2014) it is known as Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic.

The charitable shuttle service for religious leaders and dignitaries evolved into full-scale charitable air ambulance operations and finally to providing free flights for ambulatory patients. The initial vision has grown into a network of over 700 volunteer pilots in the Mid-Atlantic region who use their private planes to fly people in need to places they can receive specialized medical treatment. Angel Flight coordinates missions of mercy from its offices in Virginia Beach, Virginia helping patients to find "the shortest distance between home and hope."

Dr. Evans served as Senior Minister at The National Presbyterian Church for 18 years until he retired in 1991. He then began serving as a part-time Minister-at-Large for the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in Menlo Park, California. He died at his home in Fresno, California of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on October 29, 2008.
