Richard first soloed on Jan. 06,1963, at age 16. He began his flying career in 1969 as a corporate pilot flying a Grumman Gulfstream for ITT based at New York’s La Guardia airport. Richard joined Piedmont Airlines in July 1978 as a YS-11 copilot, and upgraded to B-737 Captain in Jan. 1983. He ended his airline career flying the Caribbean as an Airbus 320 Captain, with over 24,000 flight hours. Richard was presented with the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award in 2013, by the FAA, for more than fifty consecutive years of flying without an accident, incident, or violation. Richard loved both airplanes and airports, with Washington National, where he was based for over 11 years, his favorite airport. He considered airliners "engineered nobility” -- loving all that he flew.
