Bob McMahon (1917 – 1977) was an avid flight and space enthusiast even as a teenager. He designed and built model aircraft and competed in various air shows, winning two awards at one show in Omaha. A physical ailment kept him from service in WWII even though he applied to the Air Force, Army and Navy.
He graduated from the University of Iowa in the 1940s with degrees in chemistry and design skills. His working years in aircraft and space industries involved the bonding of rare earths, the performance of equipment in vacuum, communications technology and visualization of spacecraft among other pioneering activities.
