Graduated #1 in his class at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco, TX after the Air Force allowed high school graduates to apply for pilot training.
He went on to fly the F-86 and F-100 which were the two first-line fighters at that time.
He was assigned as an Intelligence Officer for the 322nd Fighter Group and was involved with an operation to move an entire and complete fighter squadron from the United States to Europe in a 24-hour period.
