Ron Omberg worked on the development of the Atlas-D missile at Vandenberg Air Force Base during 1958 and 1959 while completing his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at nearby Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The Atlas-D missile was ultimately used to send John Glenn into orbit, and an Atlas-D is currently in the NASM missile collection.
