    From May of 1968 to May of 1969 Detwiler, an Air Force Academy Graduate, flew 335 combat missions as an F-100 pilot at Phu Cat Air Base in the Republic of South Vietnam. During that time he flew 72 combat missions with the "Misty" Fast Facs in North Vietnam and Laos. On 22 Apr 1969 Detwiler, flying an F-100D, was shot down and recovered while leading a strike flight in Laos. From April of 1972 to April of 1973 he flew another 110 combat missions in North Vietnam as an F-4 pilot and participated in the Laredo Fast Fac Program in North Vietnam. After active duty, Detwiler served in the New York Air Guard for 25 years, flying as a C-5 pilot in numerous campaigns including Panama, Desert Shield/Storm, and Somalia. He retired as a Brigadier General from the New York Air Guard in 1997. Decorations included 23 Air Medals, 3 DFC, Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit.(Shown here after last Misty Mission-Jan 1969).
