    Samuel Greenwood served in the US Army Air Forces on Tinian Island in the Northern Marianas from December 1944 to August 1945 with the 505th Bomb Group, 482nd Squadron and with the 504th Bomb Group, 680th Squadron as a tail gunner on a B-29 completing 35 missions against the Japanese Empire during World War II.

    He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for a mission over Yokohama on May 29, 1945, where, despite considerable battle damage flying as deputy lead plane, they were able to successfully bomb the primary target and return to Tinian, completing a 14 hour 15 minute mission.
