?»?Sgt. Donald L. Street was inducted into the U.S. Army in June 1942. His civilian expertise as a long-time amateur radio hobbyist enabled the Army to easily train him to be an aircraft radio repairman, specifically on the B-24 Liberator bomber. After a sea voyage aboard the troop carrier U.S.S. Wharton, he arrived in the South Pacific in 1943, assigned to the 394th Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Group ("Bomber Barons"), 13th Air Force. He and other ground crew members were vital to the support of the "Bomber Barons?€? and their campaign against Japanese-held islands during World War II. From 1943-1945, he was based on Espiritu Santo, Guadalcanal, Munda (Bougainville), Los Negros, Wakde, Noemfoor, Morotai, Samar, and the Philippines. His training and expertise with very high frequency (VHF) radios which were newly installed on B-24's meant that he was included in the advance parties supporting the bomber squadrons after each island was secured. To this end, he often flew with other ground support personnel on the first-arriving aircraft to airfields that were only days previously held by Japanese forces. Following the Japanese surrender in 1945, he returned to his hometown of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, where he married a local girl, Mavis Wojick, had 4 children, and enjoyed a successful 35-year career with General Electric. Although he never worked in aviation after his military service, he was a strong advocate and enthusiastic supporter of aviation, both military and civilian, as well as this country's space program. He also continued his life-long love of radio communications by participating as a volunteer member of the Navy/Marine Corps Military Affiliated Radio System (M.A.R.S.). In this capacity, his ?€?ham?€? radio station, W4IAZ (NNNØPJA), served as a relay for messages to and from servicemen and women stationed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He also handled message traffic to and from military and civilian personnel stationed at the U.S. Navy facility at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.
