Joseph Sgalla served in the European theatre during World War II after volunteering to serve as a parachutist in the US Army, soon after the U.S. entered WWII. Joseph served in the 82nd Airborne Division's 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. During his military service, he parachuted from the Douglas C47 troop transport plane.
Joseph earned his civilian pilots license back home in Ohio. After WWII, Joseph often traveled to local air shows and piloted a Piper J3 Cub aircraft on a regular basis, such as the Piper J3 Cub currently on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space, Udar-Hazy Center.
His military awards and decorations include: the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Parachutist Badge, WWII Victory Medal, European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal (EAME) with Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal (European Theatre of Operation), American Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
