    He was known as "Bud" and enlisted his sophomore year in college in the USAF during World War II. He wanted to be a pilot but failed the eye examination. He became a bombardier in the 401st Bomb Group. He flew 22 missions over Germany and earned 2 Air medals and 4 Oak leaf clusters and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was killed on April 13, 1944 in an air raid over Schweinfurt, Germany. He was three days short of his 20th birthday.
