    LtCol Sheldon A. Goldberg enlisted in the Air Force in 1956, was selected for Officer Candidate School in 1960, and commissioned in 1961. Navigator wings followed in 1962 as did an assignment to the Military Airlift Command. After acquiring over 3000 hours in C-124 and C-141 transports, Col Goldberg entered one of the first classes to include navigators in F-4D Weapon System Officer (WSO) training (1968).

    Upon completion of that training in 1969, he was assigned to the 497th TFS (Nite Owls), 8th TFW, RTAFB Ubon Thailand. As one of the first navigator WSOs in the Air Force's only night-dedicated fighter squadron, he helped pioneer the night-time fast-moving "OWL FAC" program while flying over 200 combat missions over Southeast Asia for which he earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses and seventeen Air Medals. LtCol Goldberg subsequently served as an F-111 instructor WSO, USAF Advisor to the German Command and General Staff College, Air Staff Planning Officer for HQ, Allied Forces Central Region, and on the faculties of the USAF Air Command and Staff College and School of Associate Programs, Air War College. Col Goldberg retired in 1985 with over 5000 flying hours.

    Col Goldberg's other awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the AF Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with
    nine campaign stars and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, as well as several German military awards.
