Walter was a charter member of the Maine Air National Guard “Maineiacs”, formed in 1947. This unit was activated during the Korean Conflict. Walter retired from the Guard in the spring of 1980. He was subsequently transferred to the Air Force Retired Reserve with an honorable discharge from the USAF. During most of his service career, Walter served as an aircraft technician and flight engineer on sundry types of airplanes.
