After graduation from park HS in Racine, WI, Allan enlisted in the Army Air Force. After basic training he shipped to Italy in October, 1944.
He served in the 15th Air Force, 47th Bomb Wing, 449th Group, 719th squadron. He served as a gunner on 41 missions over central Europe while stationed in Italy from October 1944 to July 1945. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Sadly, his older brother, Harry Coates, was killed in action in Northern Europe in February 1945.
Their father, George Coates, served in the Canadian Army for four years during WWI.
