Bernard F. Saffran, a native of Washington, DC, enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September, 1942. He served as a gunner on a B-29. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 1 June 1945. The crew of a B-29 aircraft was on a mission directed against the Nipponese industrial center of Osaka, Japan. Undeterred by the severe damage to the aircraft, the crew released their bombs scoring direct hits on the briefed target.
