    Staff Sergeant Burakowski served in the defense of his country as a Consolidated B-24 Liberator gunner in the 98th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) and flew a total of 125 missions in the Pacific Theater from May 1943 through November 1944.

    He was awarded the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster for bravery in air combat.

    In 1945 Sgt. Burakowski, a native of Buffalo, New York, was given an honorable discharge after three years and five months of service. He returned to civilian life as a miner. He died on November 21, 1998 at the age of 80 in Shoshoni, Wyoming.
