MY PILOT THROUGH OUR LIFE TOGETHER: STANLEY CHARLES KLEFSTAD. Never, as I was growing up, did I imagine being in one of those "flying machines." I was even timorous of the breathtaking off-the-ground "f1ight" imitators at Riverview, the local amusement park. Airplanes were for sky-writers over Cubs Park, for crop dusters we read about in our WEEKLY READER, for important people to use to get to where they had to go. And then one day my husband, my lovely man, presented us with plane tickets. Not only would he and I fly but our two children would fly with us, our five-year old son and our daughter—incidentally on her first birthday! To Grandmother and Grandfather's house we'd go, but much more exciting than "over the river and through the woods"!
We'd sit glued to the "as long as it takes to lift-off" radio broad-cast when Cape Canaveral's crews taught us to count down. And then to actually see them on television! And watch them take, on the MOON, those first steps for man and for mankind! Now space travel is just another incident in a newscast.
But our own travel planning starts with the question, "Which airline goes there?"
I thank my man for having introduced this one-time homebody: me, to air and space, on an airplane and in my life! My now-deceased husband: STANLEY CHARLES KLEFSTAD.
