Stanley Hughes entered the armed forces of the United States Jan. 4, 1943. After basic training, he trained to be a mechanic for B-17 bombers at Amarillo, Texas, graduating July 20, 1943. He soon entered pilot training and after ensuing 18 plus months received his pilot’s wings on March 20, 1945 being certified to fly B-17 F and G bombers. While his crew was being assembled in Rapid City, SD, the war in Europe ended. He was then scheduled for B-29 training when the war with Japan ended. He received his honorable discharge on October 21, 1945. Mr. Hughes returned to civilian life and eventually became a Division Warden of the New Jersey Forest fire Service, where his experience in aviation led him to promote the use of aircraft in fighting forest fires. He also became active in politics serving many years on the Pittsgrove Township Committee in New Jersey and later serving as mayor of that community. He passed away at the age of 68 leaving behind a loving family of a wife, three adult children and six grandchildren. His family is pleased to make this contribution to the National Air and Space Museum in his memory.
